Although touched on in a previous
blog post, the 2018 Chevy Equinox deserves more extensive exploration. This
compact crossover boasts enough changes for the current model year to easily merit the distinction of being all-new,
but what it does carry over from the previous model is a penchant for interior
room and money-saving fuel efficiency. Let’s delve into the specifics of this
newly refreshed Equinox.
What's New for 2018?
- The 2018 Chevrolet Equinox shrinks its body down by 4 inches and 400 pounds while still maintaining its maximum cargo volume of 63.5 cubic feet when the rear seat back is folded down.
- Its structure acquires more stiffness due to the extensive use of high-strength steel, including hot-stamped and press-hardened versions for the A and B pillars.
- Driver-assist technologies also get a boost while standard features now include keyless entry/start, projector-beam headlights, and LED daytime running lamps.
- Three new engines replace the previous 2.4L Dual Overhead Cam 4-cylinder with Spark-Ignited Direct Injection (see below).
Favorite New Equinox Features
Among the many new highlights of the 2018 Chevrolet Equinox,
the most notable are the updated engine choices:
- Standing
out for its fuel efficiency, the available 1.6-liter Turbo-Diesel gets up
to an EPA-estimated 40 MPG on the highway when mated to the standard
six-speed automatic transmission. Variable Valve Timing helps generate an
ample 170 horsepower and 203 lb.-ft. of
torque.
- Rated at 32 MPG on the highway and 26 MPG in the
city, the 1.5L Turbo four-cylinder also pushes out 170 horsepower.
- Delivering 252 horsepower and 260 lb.-ft. of torque, the available 2.0L Turbo-4 comes
with a nine-speed automatic transmission, allowing the Equinox to get up
to 28 MPG on the highway and tow up to 3,500 lbs.
Also getting the nod are numerous safety features, including
the following:
- Low-Speed
Forward Automatic Braking automatically stops the vehicle to reduce the
severity of a collision (or prevent it from happening altogether) if
you're traveling below 50 MPH.
- Lane
Departure Warning signals when you roam from your current lane without
activating a turn signal. If you don't take appropriate action, Lane Keep
Assist nudges you back in line.
- The
Safety Alert Seat gives you the option of having your seat bottom vibrate
in the direction of a potential hazard rather than an alert sounding from
the instrument panel.
- Forward
Collision Alert relies on the front camera to tell you when vehicles in
your path are slowing down. You can easily set the following-distance indicator to Near, Medium, or Far. Although
we don’t recommend it, you can also switch this safety feature off
entirely.
- Available
Surround Vision merges images from the four exterior cameras, so you get a virtual birds-eye
view of your surroundings to improve maneuverability.
- Teen
Driver technology—one of the most underutilized features across Chevy’s
lineup—lets you define limits, such as speed and volume, that your teenage
drivers must follow when they take the wheel. An in-vehicle report card
tells you how they did after every trip.
How Does Equinox Stack Up?
The Ford Escape offers fewer technological features than the
Equinox. Of note is the state-of-the-art MyLink® that is available even on the
base LS. This infotainment system allows for swiping and tapping on the color
touchscreen, offers voice-activated technology, Bluetooth® streaming, and
smartphone compatibility through Apple CarPlay™ and Android Auto. The Escape
requires a higher trim level and package to be
purchased if you want similar features through its SYNC 3 system.
