2016 Camaro Blows Away The Competition

Talk about blowing away the competition. The Chevrolet Camaro is a certified two-time champion, having won two of the most prestigious automotive awards in the industry: The coveted "Golden Calipers" as Motor Trend Magazine's 2016 Car of the Year, and Car And Driver Magazine's "10Best" for 2016. In each case, the Camaro left competitors in the dust with its aggressive styling, muscular performance, and world-class handling.

Best Of The Best

Each year, Car And Driver Magazine puts some of the world's finest automobiles through a grueling test to see who will come out on top as one of its 10 best cars for 2016. A vehicle must impress judges not just with their driving and technological prowess, but with their soul and character to succeed at being one of the automotive world's elite. We're proud to say that after a week of some of the most rigorous testing imaginable, the 2016 Chevy Camaro bested arch-rivals Ford Mustang and Dodge Challenger as the publication's pick for top muscle car.

Car And Driver's Jared Gall simply said that the bold new 2016 Camaro for sale in Clearwater at Dimmitt Chevrolet is nothing less than "a Corvette with a back seat."
Riding with Camaro lead development engineer Aaron Link through the wooded hills and snaking turns of GM's vast Milford, Michigan proving grounds, Gall got a taste of the new Camaro's handling and performance capabilities. “This track covers a lot of scenarios the car can be put into,” says Link. “There’s a bit of magic to it, a human element, not just science, that says, ‘Well, this is the number, so that’s it.’ There’s a feel that you have to strive for.”

Superb Handling & Performance

And how does the Camaro's handling play out on the track? According to Gall, "… the front struts and rear links keep the tires’ contact patches firmly and evenly glued to the pavement, and the car pointed precisely where the driver intends. Some competitors seem tuned to beat up their occupants in a way that places a theatrical “sportiness” above actually controlling wheel and body motions. The Camaro seems to be doing everything it can to prevent abusing the driver."
"Getting that last little bit right," explains Gall, "delivering a car that responds organically to what the driver demands, is what separates a 10Best car from the rest."

The pulsing heart and soul of the 2016 Camaro are its two phenomenal power plants: the DOHC 24-valve, 3.6-liter engine that beats out an authoritative 335 horsepower and 284 lb.-ft. of torque, and the beefy 6.2-liter LT1 V8 that that pumps out a gargantuan 455-hp and an even more astonishing 455 lb.-ft. of monstrous torque. Available transmissions include a 6-speed manual or an 8-speed automatic with manual shifting mode.

"General Motors, purveyor of so many lackluster six-cylinders in so many models for so many years, has never made such an outstanding V-6 as the 3.6-liter that is new in the Camaro. We found ourselves comparing it to the original 1991 Acura NSX’s mill," enthused Gall.
"The Chevy engine’s redline is lower and the torque base much broader and beefier than the 3.0-liter Honda V-6, but the sound, the rip to redline, and the way it overflows with character make it like few others. The standard six-speed slides easily from gear to gear, and the eight-speed automatic pops off shifts with a quickness that rivals the best dual-clutch transmissions."

Taking Down The Competition

In deciding which car would walk away with the coveted Golden Calipers, the nine Motor Trend judges were, at first, not entirely convinced that the Camaro had what it takes to compete against the likes of the Mustang. Angus MacKenzie, however, felt that the 2016 Camaro had the heart of a champion just waiting to be unleashed on the unforgiving desert proving grounds that would test the mettle of each COTY contender. “On paper, it looked strong against some the criteria. If it drove well, it was in with a real shot," he said.

MacKenzie was right, of course.

"The Chevrolet Camaro clearly deserved to win our 2016 Car of the Year accolade, says Motor Trend's Jonny Lieberman." Why’s that? Because the sixth-generation Camaro is based on General Motor’s awesome Alpha platform architecture, the same structure that underpins the Cadillac ATS and CTS, the latter being our 2014 Car of the Year."
Simply Glorious

The nine COTY judges raved about the Camaro's impressive engines, super handling, and raw street swagger. Said one judge: "I could have lapped it for the next ten years. I am absolutely in love with this car. Wow wow wow wow wow."
The judges also loved the SS-badged Camaro's "glorious" naturally aspirated, 6.2-liter LT1 V8 with 455-hp V8 with 455 lb.-ft. of torque and a "lovely shifting" six-speed manual transmission. "To say we liked this car is a severe understatement," Motor Trend enthused.

A World-Class Revelation

The Camaro outperformed the rest of the COTY finalists in six critical categories: Design, Efficiency, Safety, Value, Engineering Excellence, and Performance of Intended Function.
Design: "The surface handling is fresh, and the line works great," one judge intoned. And the updated cockpit is "hugely improved."

Efficiency:  "…compared to equivalent Mustangs, we’d be willing to bet that the Camaro V-6 bests the EcoBoosted Ford in the real world. Now, the SS is rated at 14/26 mpg to the GT’s 15/25. However, according to our Real MPG tests, the Camaro SS gets 16.1/25.2/19.2 mpg city/highway/combined compared to the Mustang GT’s 15.9/24.1/18.8. The less said about the two-ton-plus Dodge Challenger’s fuel economy, the better."
Safety: While the 2016 Camaro is too new to have been rated by the NHTSA and IIHS, the magazine contends that it's likely to receive the same high marks as the Alpha platform it's based upon did with the Cadillac ATS and CTS.

Value: "Here’s another criteria the Camaro utterly nails," says Motor Trend's Lieberman. "A 275-hp turbo for $27K, 335 horsepower for $28.5K, or 455-hp for $37K? This isn’t rocket science, people."
Engineering Excellence: "Chevy hit this one out of the park," gushed Liberman. He notes that while arch-rival Mustang gains 196 pounds, the Camaro shed more than 200 pounds. "Weight is the enemy of performance, and you can easily see this when you note that the new SS is nearly as quick in a straight line (0-60 mph in 4 seconds flat, quarter-mile in 12.4 seconds) as the outgoing and more powerful Z/28. Lower weight plus the superlative Alpha bones make handling measurably mega; the SS runs our figure-eight track in 24.1 seconds, two-tenths off a Porsche 911 Carrera 4S," says Lieberman.

Performance of Intended Function: Motor Trend says that the new Camaro may have actually "transcended" this criterion. Judges compared the Camaro not just against similar pony cars like the Mustang, but against BMWs, Audis, Porsches, and Mercedes-Benz AMGs. Angus MacKenzie sums it all up by saying, that the new Camaro is "a revelation."

"Absolutely world-class sports car performance and dynamics from an American icon. The new Camaro is one of the finest driver’s cars in the world. And that’s before you even talk about the price,” oozed MacKenzie.
